Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’s holiday music album, A Very Spidey Christmas, is now available for download. Sony’s animated superhero film is one of the biggest titles of December, receiving near universal critical acclaim (and multiple awards nominations), as well as a solid opening weekend at the box office. While there obviously have been several Spider-Man films since the turn of the century, Into the Spider-Verse was praised by many for being a creative and refreshing spin on the mythos, representing the next step forward for the genre as a whole.
With Phil Lord and Chris Miller involved as producers, one of the many reasons why Spider-Verse connected with audiences is its strong sense of humor. This was readily apparent in the opening moments, where Peter Parker (voiced by Chris Pine) recapped his life’s story for viewers. One detail that quickly became a fan-favorite was the Spider-Man Christmas album, which included such tunes as “Spidey-Bells.” It was previously confirmed at least two of those tracks has been recorded, and now it looks like the whole thing was actually made.
According to Film Music Reporter, Sony put together a five-song EP, which was released today (December 21, as of this writing). You can check out the full track listing and listen to “Spidey-Bells” in the space below:
- Joy to the World - Shameik Moore Spidey-Bells (A Hero’s Lament) - Chris Pine Deck the Halls - Jake Johnson Up on the House Top - Chris Pine The Night Before Christmas 1967 (Spoken Word) - Jorma Taccone
Much like “Spidey-Bells,” the other songs on the album change up the lyrics of classic holiday tunes to make them all about Spider-Man and what he does for the people of New York. On “Up on the House Top,” Pine gets into a festive mood by gifting villains like Doc Ock and the Lizard prison time, while Moore’s Miles Morales bemoans not getting paid for his heroic duties on “Joy to the World.” Most amusingly (especially considering his character’s status in the beginning of the film), Jake Johnson’s Peter Parker finds himself playing to a dead crowd as he remixes “Deck the Halls” with lyrics like “‘Tis the season to save millions.” The songwriters did a very good job crafting entertaining and humorous renditions that’ll be a funny alternative to more traditional Christmas music at parties.
Some might be a little disappointed by there being only a handful of tracks on the album; the Into the Spider-Verse trailer revealed Parker had recorded other songs like “Silent Night (You’re Welcome),” “Swingin’ Around the Mistletoe,” and “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like a Non-Denominational Holiday.” Still, this is a nice novelty project and a small Christmas gift on the part of Sony to Spider-Verse fans. And perhaps some of those other tunes will be revealed at a later date, but for now, holiday carolers have new material to learn.
