WARNING! Spoilers for Midnight Kiss ahead
New Year’s Eve is a time of reflection and celebration, but Hulu’s Into the Dark takes this to fearsome levels with their latest effort, Midnight Kiss, which features a shocking ending with a mammoth twist.
Midnight Kiss, directed by Carter Smith (The Ruins), looks at a group of longtime friends decide to ring in the New Year by retreating to a cushy guest house and engaging in their yearly tradition of “Midnight Kiss,” a playful game that gets them to push their boundaries. As the night goes on, the relationships between this close group of friends becomes strained as repressed feelings and emotions come to the surface. Soon they realize that a dangerous killer has also joined their holiday festivities and they struggle to not only stay alive, but also stay friends. As the group of friends get picked off by the mysterious murderer, it becomes clear that this killer has some connection to their past. Midnight Kiss creates some compelling suspects, but the killer is actually a trusted member of their own group.
Hulu’s Midnight Kiss stirs up many emotions as the group of friends’ night becomes more chaotic, but in the end it’s the least likely individual who turns out to be the masked culprit.
Who Is The Masked Killer?
As the chaos of the night continues, it’s revealed that Midnight Kiss’ masked killer ties back to the group’s New Year’s Eve festivities from 2013. He’s evidently never gotten over how these friends all treated them that night and has carefully worked himself back into their lives for their present New Year’s Eve. The bitter killer devotes his existence to make sure that it’s the last year that these friends ever ring in. However, it turns out that the murderer isn’t some outsider, but Logan (Lukas Gage), the meek member of the group who’s been secretly pining for Cameron (Augutus Prew), for over five years.
Logan’s been desperate and waiting for Cameron to make a move, but because he hasn’t noticed him, Logan has fallen deeper into his own dangerous delusions. Logan puts this elaborate murder plot into play as a way to eliminate all of his obstacles and finally be alone with Cameron.
The Real Meaning Of Midnight Kiss’ Ending
Logan’s bombshell is a shocking blow, but in spite of his commitment to his scheme, he’s still unable to achieve his goal. The rest of the group collectively takes Logan out with a well-placed syringe and a gunshot wound, but the damage that their former friend has done continues to linger. These friends may survive the ordeal, but they’re all irrevocably traumatized and left with an uncertainty about how well people can really know or trust somebody. Logan may not succeed in winning over Cameron, but he’s able to pollute his thoughts and taint his relationship with Joel (Scott Evans). Trust is forever lost between this tightly knit group.
Even in the final moments of the evening, more revelations come to light that show that Logan wasn’t the only duplicitous one who had ulterior motives on New Year’s Eve. Joel hasn’t been entirely honest with Cameron and even though Logan is now out of the picture, it looks like their romantic days are also numbered. The only relationship that seems genuinely stronger after this carnage is Cameron’s bond with Hannah (Ayden Mayeri), which is somewhat ironic considering they’re the one platonic pairing where there’s no promise of romance. In the end, they learn that it’s these unions that mean the most and what are truly important.
Logan’s manipulation of his friends means that this is likely the end of their “Midnight Kiss” tradition. Considering the events of Into the Dark’s Midnight Kiss, both Cameron and Hannah should focus on what’s real and to find fulfillment with their humble lives, rather than pining over romantic fantasies. After this traumatic experience, it’s safe to say that the group’s collective New Year’s resolution will be to better veto the people they let into their lives.
