Fans of the post-apocalyptic AMC original martial-arts drama series Into the Badlands can rejoice following news that has the show officially renewed and expanded for a full season three order. Since premiering in 2015, the show has gone on to see two seasons ordered and aired on the popular basic cable channel, with a central narrative centering around the trials and travails of a mighty warrior named Sunny (Daniel Wu) and a young boy who goes by the initials M.K. (Aramis Knight) as they make their way across the war-torn, feudal landscape of the eponymous Badlands - located in an area that once belonged to the United States.
The futuristic premise that stands behind Into the Badlands was co-created by chief showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, and is an original drama series that only just recently saw its return to AMC by way of the second season premiere late last month. As the series continues, fans of the highly original dystopian epic have even more to look forward to in the form of an expanded third season, following the season two finale later this May.
Per an official press release, Charlie Collier - the current sitting president of AMC, SundanceTV, and AMC Studios - was proud to announce that Into the Badlands will return for an expanded season 3 comprising sixteen episodes in 2018. Speaking to his own enthusiasm for the project going forward, Collier stated:
Likwise, returning Into the Badlands showrunners Gough and Millar were quick to drum up their own undying enthusiasm for working on the original martial-arts drama series at AMC. In a joint statement, Gough and Millar commented:
“Into the Badlands looks like nothing else on television, a literal high-wire act attracting passionate and dedicated fans by the millions. Thanks to series creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, the terrific cast, led by Daniel Wu, the amazing martial arts team guided by the incomparable Master Dee Dee and fight directors Stephen Fung and Andy Cheng, and everyone else involved who brings this thrill ride to the fans.”
Hopefully fans of Into the Badlands will be excited by the prospect of an expanded sixteen-episode season three due out next year - especially considering the fact that the show was put on hiatus for over year, following its season one debut. Only time will tell how well received the show will continue to be from both the cast and crew involved and their viewers, but here’s to hoping for the very best in the meantime.
“We are excited and grateful to continue our journey into the Badlands with Charlie, Joel, Susie and all of our friends at AMC. We also want to give a big clipper salute to our Irish and Chinese partners! The thought of doing an expanded 16-episode season is both thrilling and exhausting!!”
Into the Badlands airs on Sunday at 10pm EST on AMC.
