Avengers: Infinity War writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely provide the timeline of Thanos’ quest for the Infinity Gauntlet. Weeks after the release of Marvel’s most ambitious film yet, Avengers 3 remains to be a favorite topic of conversation among fans. Aside from countless attempts to map out how things can be resolved (or not) in next year’s Avengers 4, loyal MCU followers also love breaking down how the events of the film connect to past films in the franchise.

It took 18 films of build-up for Marvel Studios to pull an enormous event like Infinity War. And while they’ve done a decent job in linking all their narratives to create an interconnected cinematic universe, there are still several plot mysteries that remain unexplained. Some of them might be answered in future films, but others just need clarifications already for fans considering its direct impact on the latest MCU flick

Speaking with Collider (via CBR) about all things Infinity War, Markus and McFeely answered some of fans’ burning questions after seeing Marvel’s culminating films including the timeline of Thanos’ acquisition of the Infinity Gauntlet. “I think the Gauntlet was made when Loki was pretending to be Odin,” Markus explained. “Presumably, Eitri was running a relatively regular business and people would have gone there and said something. So, it hasn’t been that long.”

The latest reveal helps clear out the convoluted history of the Infinity Gauntlet in the MCU. Making its first appearance in 2011’s Thor, in Odin’s vault, fans were confused when several years later, the Mad Titan put it on in the post-credit scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Last year’s Thor: Ragnarok established that the one in Asgard is a fake and Infinity War revealed that the one Thanos carries around was created by King Eitri of Nidavellir - the same person who created Thor’s Mjolnir, and eventually, the Stormbreaker.

This also adds to the narrative ramifications of Loki’s impersonation of Odin for a few years after faking his death in Thor: The Dark World. Not only did it allow for Hela’s return to Asgard and its eventual destruction in Ragnarok, but it also paved the way for Thanos to easily take over Nidavellir which was left vulnerable without the real Odin’s protection.

Avengers: Infinity War made sure to show an extra Gauntlet left lying in the Nidavellir. While its existence wasn’t thoroughly discussed by Thor and Eitri, it’s safe to say that it’s some kind of prototype of the one Thanos is wearing, possibly allowing it to also hold all six Infinity Stones. With the Mad Titan’s Gauntlet physically wrecked after the snap, it’s curious if the one left with Eitri will play a huge role in Avengers 4 as the heroes’ attempt to find a way out of the predicament that they’re currently in.
