The final trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has arrived, bringing with it a wealth of exciting new footage - including a first proper look at Thanos’ terrifying lieutenants, The Black Order. The group of lethal aliens can be seen standing amidst fiery wreckage, with Proxima Midnight holding Loki at spearpoint, and the terrifying Ebony Maw can also be seem in close-up later on, seemingly torturing poor Doctor Strange. The other two members of the Black Order whom we’ll see in the movie are Corvus Glaive and the ironically-named Black Dwarf (he’s the big one), though for the movie he’s been renamed Cull Obsidian.
In the comics, the Black Order launch a massive simultaneous attack across Earth in an effort to collect the Infinity Stones so that Thanos can put them in the Infinity Gauntlet and unleash horror on the universe with a simple snap of his fingers. We know from the end of Thor: Ragnarok that Loki is almost certainly in possession of one of the Infinity Stones - specifically the Tesseract, or space stone, which he stole from the vaults of Asgard before it was destroyed. Since the space stone is one of two stones that we see in the Infinity Gauntlet in the trailer, it’s safe to assume that the scene with Loki captured by the Black Order is also the scene in which Thanos acquires the space stone.
Here’s a quick rundown of the four Black Order members we’ll see the movie, and what their roles were in the comic book storyline. Proxima Midnight (the one with the spear) is sent to Atlantis to take the Infinity Stone from Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Corvus Glaive is sent to attack the X-Men at Jean Grey’s School for Higher Learning (formerly known as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters). Ebony Maw is sent to the Sanctum Sanctorum in New York City, where he uses his powers to squeeze information out of Doctor Strange (presumably this is what we see in the trailer). Finally, Black Dwarf/Cull Obsidian is sent to Wakanda, and the Infinity War trailer shows the massive battle that ensues upon his arrival. In the comic book version of Infinity War there’s also another member of the Black Order, Supergiant, but she will not appear in the movie.
We’ve previously seen the Black Order in toy form and on a promo poster for Avengers: Infinity War, but this is the first time we’ve seen them all gathered together in the movie. Given that this movie is the culmination of ten years’ worth of set-up, and features the largest collection of Marvel superheroes ever seen in live-action, it makes sense for them to face off against the Black Order before they finally band together to try and stop Thanos from wiping out half of all life in the universe.
Thanos has had lackeys to do his dirty work for him before - from Loki, to Nebula, to Ronan the Destroyer - but the Black Order form a formidable army that could mean serious casualties among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Will the Avengers be able to keep the Infinity Stones out of Thanos’ hands, or will Infinity War end with the finger-snap felt around the universe?
