The latest box office numbers bring Avengers: Infinity War past $850 million and put it on track to be the fastest film to hit $1 billion ever. There was never any doubt that Avengers 3 was going to be a successful movie, but with its critical consensus not fully formed and expectations high after Black Panther’s dominance, fans weren’t sure just how things would shake out. As it stands, however, Avengers: Infinity War broke opening weekend records to become the biggest domestic and global earner of all time - and it still hasn’t opened in China or Russia.
With fan and critical response for the film mostly positive in its first week of release, Avengers: Infinity War is gearing up for another win at the box office this weekend. With Deadpool 2 still two weeks out, Marvel’s second film of the year has little in the way of competition. Thanks to Marvel moving up the film’s release by a week, Avengers 3 has plenty of time to continue shattering records. Now, the latest numbers show it’s got another bigger milestone in its sights.
Deadline is reporting the latest numbers for Avengers: Infinity War thanks to Wednesday’s box office haul being totaled. After less than a week since it debuted, Avengers 3 has already earned $857.3 million globally. That brings its domestic total to $323.6M and its international to $534.7M, putting $1 billion within reach. In fact, it’s estimated that Marvel’s latest will cross $1B this Saturday, making it the fastest film in history to do so.
Black Panther was Marvel’s fifth film to crack $1B, but the next two Avengers films are all but guaranteed to do the same. Avengers: Infinity War is tracking way ahead of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it’s bound to break the $1B speed milestone one way or another. Currently, Star Wars: The Force Awakens holds the record, having hit $1B after only 12 days in theaters. If Avengers 3 achieves the feat this Saturday, it will have done it in eight days.
Avengers: Infinity War is already the fastest movie to break $500M, reaching the global milestone after just three days in theaters. The new numbers send it past the final totals for films like Wonder Woman, Thor: Ragnarok, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, while Avengers 3 beat Justice League after just four days in theaters.
Up next, Marvel will release Ant-Man & the Wasp. The film is sure to do well, but it will definitely be the weaker performer of the MCU’s three 2018 releases. That will especially be true as Ant-Man 2 is opening a month late in the UK. Still, the MCU is doing strong and has already passed $15B at the box office. And as Avengers: Infinity War continues to defy expectations, the next billion will be right around the corner.
