It hasn’t even been out a week and Avengers: Infinity War can’t stop breaking box office records. The latest MCU offering, which has already surpassed DC’s Justice League in worldwide box office success, has now broken another box office record, proving anyone who thought uniting the biggest stars in the MCU might be a gamble was wrong.
Avengers: Infinity War, which saw an ensemble cast of the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe unite against one its most exciting villains ever, smashed box office records during its opening weekend. The movie is already a huge financial triumph despite worries that it may fall short of box office expectations even with massive marketing efforts to ensure its success. It set a new all-time domestic and worldwide opening weekend record at the box office, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
According to Deadline, Infinity War has also broken the record for best Monday for a movie at the box office during the month of April, taking in an estimated $25.2 million yesterday. The record was previously held by Furious 7, which earned an impressive $14 million on April 6, 2015.
Despite its extraordinary box office power, the all time Monday record is still held by another MCU offering. Black Panther crushed the competition when it brought in a whopping $40.1 million on the Monday of President’s Day weekend in February. Deadline also points out that Infinity War is currently ranked 9th overall for Monday box office records, thanks in part to not opening on a long weekend. Perhaps Infinity War will break more Monday records on Memorial Day weekend, but then it will have both Solo: A Star Wars Story and Deadpool 2 to contend with.
Still, Infinity War looks like it will have the staying power to continue to dominate at the box office well into May, and it will be interesting to see just how much the movie will earn in total. As of this morning, the movie has already grossed $282.9 million domestically, quickly approaching the 5 day/$300 million record set by The Force Awakens. The stars of the movie continue to post their reactions on social media and do promotional appearances, which is only helping keep the momentum of this latest MCU offering going. It also doesn’t hurt that Infinity War isn’t currently facing any real competition at the box office and it appeals to a wide range of moviegoers.
With Black Panther having broken so many box office records it will be exciting to see just how successful Infinity War becomes, especially since it’s Marvel Studios 10th Anniversary. They’ve definitely proved they know how to throw a celebration, the only question now will be if they can continue the momentum.
